Sunday Musings #16: One with a lot of YA and Pinterest-ing

Happy Sunday people!

I know for most of you Sunday is a week to relax and unwind. But for someone who lives at Dubai, Sunday is the day to get back to being busy. Which means Sunday is the new Monday. As I am writing this post, I have finished my breakfast and should be perfectly ready to hunt down the long to-do list in a minute. Or thirty.

You all know Megan from Gingermom Reads right? She has started this interesting  support group board for books bloggers on Pinterest. I am still bothering on chat with questions on how it works and what I can do with it. but I found enough bookish posts to keep my occupied for days. If you are interested, send a request to her.

What I read this week:

I am happy to announce that now I am finally part of the cool gang. Yes I have read the ‘To all the boys I have love before’ trilogy and saw the Netflix movie and I can safely say I liked them all.

What I watched this week:

And y’all I didn’t stop there, I went a bit crazy on how cute Noah Centineo is and I saw all his films that were on Netflix this week. Okay that didn’t help my reading/ blogging schedule. Yes that is three YA movies plus the usual stuff I watch anyway.

I guess that is kinda a productive right?

Book Review: The Fourth Monkey Killer

It is no secret that I love a serial killer and of course a good cop chase. specially when I receive a book from an author I already have read and loved who now promises an ‘impossible to catch’ psychopath. Well I had to grab the chance to read The Fourth Monkey Killer by J D Barker.

I know you all love my rant induced reviews and are dying to read more from me. Of course you do. (YOU DO, right???). But for once I thought I will let you guys read something from a friend who is not a book reviewer as he begged for a chance to write for my blog (one of these is a lie). So here we go.

Book Name: The Fourth Monkey Killer elgeewrites Book Review: The Fourth Monkey Killer The Fourth Monkey Killer
Author: J D Barker
Genre: Fiction – Thriller
Characters: Sam Porter
Setting: Chicago, The USA

Three years after the critically acclaimed and multiple award winning Forsaken, Barker comes up the first book of the series named after the central character of the plot; The Fourth Monkey Killer (4MK).

A major portion of the novel covers events across just a couple of days and the narration moves at a brisk pace. Even the flashback portion that runs parallel to the live narration pertains to a reasonably short period of time and keeps the plot on its toes.

Non-linear narration has been handled professionally and I wouldn’t be far from truth when I say that this does not come across as the work of an author penning just his second novel.

The setting up of the flashback narration, read as: diary entries, is a small dampener in what is a near-flawless price of work. There aren’t many places where unnecessary details or deliberate mis-directions drag the story which helps sustain one’s interest. The fact that Barker has been able to give us a fabulous view into the killer’s head despite the brevity deserves appreciation.

Bottomline:

4MK would appeal to you if you are a fan of detective novels, if you are into stories involving serial killers and to those that like fast paced thrillers.

Hey, it is me again. Do you like the psychopath and troubled cop trope? Do you miss me already? Are you interested in posting on my blog? Talk to me in the comments.

P.S Hint: I would be really glad if you did miss me!

Book review: The Finishing Touches

A real long time ago, I found Hester Browne out of nowhere and I could not get enough of her books. I read the Little Browne Agency and hunted down (after considerable difficulties) the rest of the books in the trilogy and completed all of them in less than a week’s time. So it was a no brainer when I saw The Finishing Touches by Hester Browne on the shelves that I made a grab for it ASAP.

Book Name: The Finishing Touches

Finishing Touches book cover

Author: Hester Browne

Genre: Fiction – Romance

Characters: Betsy Phillimore, Lord Phelam and Lady Frances (Franny) Phillimore, Liv and Jamie O’Hare, Nancy, Kathleen

Setting: LondonThe UK

Plot

Returning home to attend her adoptive mother’s funeral, Betsy Phillimore learns that her mother’s beloved finishing school is on the brink of being shut down. Saving the Finishing touches means having to fight the unfriendly headmistress, indifferent students and a former nemesis who is interested in her recently widowed father.

While she attempts to reconstruct their archaic syllabus and teaching methods, she realizes she is closer to finding her biological mother than ever before. Does she even want to open that can of worms?

Betsy has taken it upon herself to make a financially responsible adult out of her rich and spoilt BFF, Liv when her father absconds from the scene. Enter Liv’s brother and Betsy’s long time crush Jamie, who seems smitten by Betsy as well. Does the boy get the girl? Or will the entry of another handsome bursar distract her? Read The Finishing Touches to find out more.

Hester Browne’s books are usually straight forward love story with a strong female lead and an interesting back story. She didn’t fail this time as well, the plot was new and interesting.

Characters

While I liked Betsy’s feisty and complicated self, I loved Liv and Jamie more. They were witty and charming. The younger students didn’t make a mark but the cook and the housekeeper, Nancy and Kathleen did. Though there were lots of adorable characters none of them had an interesting sub plot except maybe for Liv.

Writing

I love Hester Browne’s writing that ensured The Finishing Touches stayed as a feel good, light hearted chick-lit just like her other novels. Her witty dialogues and funny scenes had me entertained throughout. The pace slacked at times and there were times that I was kinda distracted, as the sub plots didn’t hold my interest.

Bottom line

If you are looking for a light hearted chick lit set in the UK, you might try The Finishing Touches. Though it is no way as good as the Little Browne Agency trilogy, The Finishing Touches is worth a read.

Sunday Musings #15: One about sudoku, books and meeting old mates

Heya people.
I am so excited for this week to begin. My best friend is getting married this Thursday and I will get to meet many of my gal friends. Some of whom I have not met for years now. I can hardly wait.

I have taken to playing Sudoku daily. I play at least 3 games and I am trying to beat my own scores. Is anyone else playing it? Is there an iOS app that you recommend?

I finally finished ‘The Forty Rules of Love’ by Elif Shafak. I am disappointed that I didn’t love it despite it had many things going right for it.

I am kinda lost with A-Z challenge as I am dealing with letters that are hard to find books with. Any book suggestion is welcome.
