The one about the UAE National Day: Sunday Musings #100

Last week, we celebrated the 49th National day of the UAE with a lonnng weekend. Yes we had a 5 day weekend to mark the National day and Commemoration day. And it has been a fabulous holdiay!

With the Covid restrictions, we had a few events cancelled, some at the last minute. But we did have a spectacular show of fireworks and we drove down the beach to get a better view of it.

How was your weekend? What are you currently watching and reading? How are you faring in your reading challenges? Let's talk. Share on X

Of course there were several huge sales and discounts and as expected, the retails and the malls were filled with somewhat socially distancing people.

How has your week been?

What I read this week

I finished reading Anxious People by Fredrik Backman and I loved it, unsurprisingly. And I will be reviewing it very soon.

And I have currently picked up Ziggy, Stardust and Me by James Brandon, as a part of 2020 A to Z Reading Challenge for the letter Z.

Any book suggestions for the remaining letters – Q and X?

What I watched this week

I caught up with Undoing from HBO last week. And I was not particularly happy with it. With such powerful cast like Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, I expected better.

I also watched Safe, (created by Harlen Coben) on Netflix. Another unsatisfactory crime thriller.

I finally started watching “This is US” as well, but I am gonna go slow. What other award winning shows should I be watching already?

  1. Your National Day celebration sounds wonderful. Despite some events being cancelled, I am glad you had a nice time. 🙂 I am glad to hear you enjoyed Anxious People. I look forward to reading it. I have Red at the Bone on my TBR shelf. I am so glad to see you liked it. I will be prepared with a box of tissue when I read it. I appreciate the warning!

I hope you have had a great week and enjoy your weekend!

  2. Those pictures are beautiful! 5 days off sounds fantastic! It sounds like you enjoyed the downtime. I finished The Undoing last week as well and that last episode seemed to be so different from the others. I was a little disappointed as well. This is Us is such a beautiful show. I hope you enjoy it! I also really enjoy A Million Little Things!

    Have a great week!

  3. Oh you got some great photos! It was the Thanksgiving holiday here but we just stay home. I plan to watch tv but then I don’t. I read instead. I hope you find a show you enjoy more. Stay safe and well. Enjoy your reads!

  4. Those fireworks look spectacular
Our local Christmas firework displays have been canceled but I think they plan to go ahead with the ones at New Year.

If you are a Harry Potter fan Quidditch Through the Ages might suit

Wishing you a great reading week

  5. Beautiful pictures!

I enjoyed The Undoing…Safe was okay. I loved This Is Us for the first couple of seasons. I’m starting to get bored, but I still watch.

I hope you have a great week!

  6. Nice that you got to enjoy the fireworks despite restrictions!

I really enjoyed Anxious People, too! Bummer that Undone and the Harlan Coban crime adaptation were less than stellar. I find that a lot of shows disappoint. Books are so much better for the most part. I enjoyed Virgin River and Enola Holmes. I want to watch Netflix’s Rebecca. Loved the Alfred Hitchcock version. Have a great week! 🙂

  7. Hey Gayathri, my weekend has been good thank you. I was able to go out to do some Christmas shopping and I started putting my Christmas decorations up, too! 🎄 Sounds like you had a lovely long weekend. 😊

I am currently watching Fox’s crime-thriller series, Prodigal Son (2020) and Netflix’s reboot of the mystery-documentary series, Unsolved Mysteries (2020), and I am loving both! I am very sorry to hear that your watching has been disappointing, especially as both Undoing and Safe were shows I was considering watching. Maybe won’t rush to see them now! 😅

Take care in the coming week, happy reading and hopefully better viewing, too! 🤞

  8. Great photos. The best thing about The Undoing was the cast…and the fact that it drove me to read the book, which had been languishing on my Kindle.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  9. Looks like you had such a great holiday – love the pictures! – and 5 days off! Woohoo!

So I did a quick glance at my goodreads – I’ve got nothing for X, but for Q I recommend Queen of Someday by Sherry D. Ficklin. So good!

Enjoy This is Us – such a good show. We haven’t watched the most recent episodes yet. Have a great week!

  10. I liked This is Us for the first season but then I lost interest after I found out what happened to the dad. Hopefully you will love it from beginning to current ❤️. Have a wonderful week!

  11. How about “Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert’s Story ” by Debbie Tung ? It’s a graphic novel but I have already read one of hers and loved it (it was about books). Nothing comes to mind as to X, sorry. I started following you on Instagram, but I’m afraid I don’t visit IG regularly. What beautiful pictures you have posted there, colourful and gorgeous landscapes 🙂

  12. I love the pictures, Gayathri, it looks amazing, and I’m glad you were able to celebrate even during the pandemic. I think we all need some kind of normalcy right now.
Have you read Quentins by Maeve Binchy? It’s a book I really enjoyed – it’s set in Ireland, and has to do with a restaurant… I don’t have any suggestions for books starting with x, though…
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.
