The One Where I Learn About UV Index: Sunday Musings #87

I have been speaking quite a bit about the temperature and humidity this summer in Dubai, so here is another fun thing I have been obsessing over this week: the UV index.

As a dark skinned Indian, who had never been worried as a kid about tan or the sun protection (I know I was young and stupid) I had my first experience on sunburns this week. All thanks to walking from the gym to parking lot which hardly took 2 to 3 minutes, and despite wearing a lame sunscreen.

While I spend my weekend grumbling, take look at the UV index for Dubai. Also send me some common sense, if you have aplenty.

What I read this week

I am currently reading The Little Teashop in Tokyo by Julie Caplin with a couple of my friends. And alternating it with Americanah by by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

What I watched this week

I am re-watching Modern Family on Netflix currently and I am loving every episode of it.

I just started Good Omens on Prime and it seems intriguing. Should I read the book before I watch it?

Excellent blog post. I am a light skinned black who must wear sun screen, and all of my grandkids do as well.

I am sorry for your sunburn. They can be so painful at their worst. 🙁 I hope you are enjoying your current reads. I keep hearing great things about Americanah. One day I will read it.

In the summer, my area is often falls under the very high to extreme categoryies (9-12) on the UV index. Today it is 10.8 and tomorrow it is supposed to be 11.1.

I hope you have a great week! Take care and try to stay out of the sun!

Oh, ouch! Especially if sunburn isn’t something you usually deal with!
I burn so quickly, I don’t dare go out in summer without suncream and I keep a tube in my bag too for topping up… I’m so pale usually that I practically glow in the dark.

I recommend aloe vera gel (keep it in the fridge). It soothes any kind of burn but is awesome with sunburn… It’s also great if you’ve just been in the sun all day for soothing and moisturising the skin.

Yes, I am all about aloe these days. Thank you for your tips.

I just checked for where I am right now (Montana) and my home (Southern California) and the UV index is 8 which is considered high. 12 is insane! I need to get better about wearing sunblock.

    I love Modern Family too!

I have never watched Modern Family, but now I’m curious. I’ll have to check it out.

I’m always trying to find new online shows. On Netflix, I loved Gilmore Girls and Grace and Frankie. And many others.

Enjoy your week and your books, and thanks for visiting my blog.

Sunscreen is essential for me. I wear it every day lol but then I burn easily so I do it to protect myself.

That is high UV though…get some aloe, works great 🙂 feels like heaven on the skin.

    Have a great week.

I’m fair with red hair, I got caught badly two weeks ago, all it too was half an hour. When I was younger I though I could get away with factor 15 now I use the same factor as my kids which is really high. I hope your burn goes away quickly, aloe Vera does a great job of soothing it.

    Have a lovely week.

Oh my goodness, my fair skin would scorch if I just looked outside in that kind of UV index.

You should definitely read Good Omens before you watch it. I love that story in any format but it’s always a good idea to read before watching, right?

    Enjoy your week!

Honestly I have been avoiding the sun a lot lately. I used to slow to get a nice tan but now I just get nervous about skin cancer or something else as I get older so I may it outside but opt for shade. This summer has been very hot too. Our UV was about 9 the last few days during the heat wave we had but 12 is wow, that is high.

I hope you have a great week, Gayathri! Happy Reading!

It’s winter here, but apparently the average is 3-4. In summer the average is generally 12-14 but mid season it often raises to 17-18, which is right off the scale. Sunscreen is definitely a must!

Wishing you a great reading week

Pleased to hear you have been enjoying your reading and viewing, Gayathri! Sorry to hear about the sunburn though – 12 is ridiculously high UV, especially considering it is like 3 or 4 here in the UK!! 😅 Take care and happy reading! 😃

Wow, that’s high UV. I’m not even sure what it is here but I’ll have to check- I’m super curious now. It’s been hot here but not that hot! Anyway, hope you have a good week ahead. And hopefully a break from the sun a bit.

I just checked and one site said it was UV index 8 (it’s 85 here and feels like 93) but another site said 4, which seems… off. Maybe because of cloud cover? Anyway it’s hot here but not as hot as where you are I imagine. 🙂

        • Gayathri

Yes, cloud cover matters too. Anyway 8 is really high!
